If you’re checking out our site, you’re probably getting ready for a paving project of some kind whether that’s seal coating, resurfacing, or adding in a brand new parking lot or driveway. If you’re putting in a brand new paved surface, you’re probably confused by the difference between asphalt and concrete. That’s okay! We’re here to help you make the best decision for your project! There are many similarities and differences, here’s a guide to deciding what is best for you!

Looks and Aesthetic

Concrete is made from cement, which means there are more opportunities for customization like stamping. Concrete is also more prone to staining.  Asphalt is typically black and there isn’t much room for customization, however, it offers contrast to your home and a sleek finish to stand out.

Cost at Installation

When you’re starting brand new, cost of materials is a huge factor to consider. Generally, concrete will be more costly. Asphalt is often at least half the price of concrete making it extremely affordable. Asphalt is typically used for large projects like parking lots and roadways due to its affordability.

Maintenance and Repairs

Concrete doesn’t require any routine maintenance outside of occasional degreasing and powerwashing. Asphalt, on the other hand, does require seal coating about every two years. When it comes to repairs, asphalt is significantly more flexible which means it holds up best to harsh weather. While cement is stronger, a crack is significantly harder and more costly to repair than asphalt.

Lifespan

With proper care and maintenance, an asphalt surface will last 30+ years while a concrete surface could last up to 50 as long as no major damage occurs.

Climate

While concrete is strong, constant freezing and thawing will cause cracks and vulnerabilities in concrete surfaces. Asphalt, on the other hand, can get oily or sticky in excessively hot environments. Asphalt’s flexibility makes it the best choice for cold weather as it can withstand the constant changes.
